This is a portrait bust sculpture of Gaspar de Portola

done with air dry clay, acrylic paint and spray varnish. The student artist is Alonso Navarro who donated the sculpture to Portola Middle School and is on display in the glass case in the entrance to the office.

The Art Show was at The Village of Orange Mall in the available/empty store...it was a great success with so many people checking out the art.

Daniel Tran won the Middle School Principal's award for his painting entiltled "On the Banks of Monterey". Loc Tran received an honorable mention for his painting "Impressions of California".

Chapman University's 150th Birthday Card Contest Winner Loc Tran wins $20, 000

The first design is Loc Tran's $20,000

winner! Loc put himself into the design holding flags and wearing his Portola shirt. The contest asked for a birthday card showing Chapman spirit over 150 years. The students studied Charles Chapman and the History of Orange...and the difference between Charles and Alfred Chapman.

The second design is Bianca Buenviaje's who is showing the old Orange next to the new.

The third is a painting done by Karen Valencia showing the styles of the time with Charles and Alfred Chapman.

This is 4 days of progression on the mural....the students had designed the mural in class and are now taking their individual drawings and combining them together onto the wall....the first section is Vienna and iconic composers with a pastoral scene like the Baroque artist Francois Boucher...The second section is New Orleans with iconic jazz and blues musicians with old southern blues shack and abstract style painting in the style of artist Stuart Davis.....the third section is New York City with iconic country/folk/rock musicians and country painting in the style of artist Thomas Hart Benton.....work in progress...

Vanessa Lopez-Angeles received awards for her self portrait painting titled "The Face of M.E." at the Orange County Department of Education's awards ceremony for student artists admitted into The Laguna Festival of Arts.

Vanessa's painting is the painting with the red blouse...the young art admirer is checking out her masterpiece.

Portola

It was a dark, gloomy day in Southern California. There were strong winds that made dark clouds drift in the sky. The clouds moved over the land and then slowly began to rain. The rain poured onto a large ship, which made it rock. Sea men rolled up their sails to keep the wind from drifting the ship away. After the ship fully docked, a soldier named Gaspar de Portola walked out of the ship and walked to the land. Rain drenched his clothes and beads of water fell from his hair and to his forehead. He wiped his face and then he sauntered around the area and surveyed the land.

Wind blew some flowers and whistled in the tall oak trees. He shivered. He slowly walked to a field where there were many cypresses and violets, which covered tall, green grass. Portola passed the field and walked up a hill. When he was halfway up, he sat down and grabbed some of the dirt. He spread the dirt over his hand and felt rough sandstones, bits of mica, and a veined stone. And then he separated his fingers, letting the dirt fall from his hands and towards the ground. He then ran his fingers through some grass, and then he looked up the hill and then at the sky. Rain fell into his face and then he coughed. He stood up and continued surveying the land.

This is inside the Festival of the Arts at the Student Art Exhibition. Kindergarten to 12th grade juried artworks from all around Orange County. Approximately 17 pieces per grade level. Portola Middle School had two fantastic art students in the show. Michelle Dinh-7th grade and Elizabeth Garcia-8th grade.

The Portola Historical Mural

Completed by the art students at Portola Middle School. Designed by art students, NJ Yazon, Lam Nguyen, Vivian Ly, Hector Ochoa. Overall winning design by NJ Yazon and Lam Nguyen was voted on by the whole school. Over 120 students participated and painted on the wall. It took a little over a month to complete.

The story the mural tells is the Portola Expedition, Gaspar de Portola and Jose Antonio Yorba traveling by horseback across California starting in San Diego meeting natives, following a timeline toward Rancho period of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Mission Fandango at San Juan Capistrano, History of the City of Orange with Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell tossing a coin in the fountain, Father Serra picking oranges, Ladies in period dress, Monterey Bay the ship San Carlos in the bay, and ruins of the church in Monterey. All of this is connected by El Camino Real.
